The catalog record

A. Elmer Crowell (1862-1952) East Harwich, MA, c. 1930 A turned head, preening shorebird with one wing up on a carved rock base. The gentle curve of the wing rises up and over and beyond the carved head. A carved tail and a carved dropped wing tip accentuate the balance of this mantle bird. A rectangular stamp signature is on the bottom of the base. Original condition, with minor touch up to gesso at thigh and foot joints, and to a couple faint age lines in the wing.

Literature: Richard A. Bourne Co., Inc, "Rare American Decoys and Ornamental Bird Carvings," October 19, 1974, addenda lot 1, similar example.
