The catalog record
A. Elmer Crowell (1862-1952) East Harwich, MA, c. 1910 7 1/2 in. long
The sanderling is not only the smallest of Crowell's working decoys, but also among his rarest species. Crowell's lesser yellowlegs carvings are often misrepresented as sanderlings. This bird, measuring only 7 1/2 inches from original bill tip to tail is a true sanderling. Original paint and bill, with gunning wear.
Literature: Quintina Colio, "American Decoys," Ephrata, PA, 1972, p. 50, similar decoy illustrated.
