The catalog record
Joseph Lincoln (1859-1938) Accord, MA, c. 1905 This Canada goose decoy displays Lincoln’s classic lines. Part of Lincoln’s genius was his ability to reduce the forms of his waterfowl carvings to their most simple elements. His carvings feature just the lines necessary to capture the essence of the species. His paint patterns were stylized and meant to give passing flight birds the impression of the “real thing” from afar. His signature feather paint was executed using a small paint brush typically used for painting houses. He would cut out a section of the bristles, forming an elongated “C” Then he would dip the end of the brush into the paint and strike the flanks of the bird in rapid succession repeating the process the length of the bird. Ever the perfectionist, Lincoln carved elegant high heads for his decoys that give them a stately appearance. In addition to pleasing body forms, Lincoln added just the needed accents, including subtle nostril, nail, and bill carving. Original paint with some working touch-up and even gunning wear. Crack in neck; plug to wood imperfection by the maker along one side. Darkening of wood to breast and some flaking to underside of tail. Typical crack in wood along bottom of bird.
