The catalog record

A. Elmer Crowell (1862-1952) East Harwich, MA, c. 1912 An early life-size bobwhite quail carving ordered by the 45th governor of Massachusetts, Eugene Noble Foss (1858-1939). Over a dozen of Crowell’s standing quail mantle carvings are in museum and private collections with this being the only quail “game” carving known at this time. Sportsmen of the Victorian era were known to commission leading artists of the day to create “trophy” or “game” carvings. One of the most popular artists for such works was Boston based artist Alexander Pope (1849-1924). Crowell is known to have carved at least one yellowlegs and a redhead. The time consuming aspect of carving this singular “trophy” pattern is quite evident. The three-dimensional rendering reveals Elmer Crowell at the pinnacle of his artistry. Outstanding features include: intricately carved wooden feet and legs, an upturned tail, gently arched and incised curved wings that are pegged to the body, painted tack eyes, and life-like beak detail. Excellent original paint, minor restoration to the outer toe of the tucked-in foot. Minimal touch-up to tip of beak. [Please note that this quail is seen photographed on one of Crowell’s original workshop cabinet doors, which is not included with the carving.]
