Sam Smith Amityville, Long Island, NY, c. 1890 7 1/2 in. wide
The Swan Island Club in North Carolina was founded in 1870 by shipwrecked Long Island hunters who stumbled upon the island while down south. Consequently, the Swan Island Club ordered most of their decoys from Long Island, New York, carvers. Brands on the bottom of this decoy include "TBW," "W. T. BRAMHALL," and two others that are worn and illegible. These Swan Island decoys are known for their wide hips; this example measures 7 1/2 inches from side to side. Old paint, worn to the wood with gunning wear, and a neck crack.
