The catalog record

A. Elmer Crowell (1862-1952) East Harwich, MA, c. 1920 An extremely rare seven-and-one-quarter-inch-tall game bird carving with a deeply impressed maker’s rectangular stamp on the bottom. This rare upland bird carving features carved thighs, a meticulously rounded tail, and relief carved feathers on the ruff, placing it among the maker’s very best grouse sculptures. Original paint with minor touch-up to toes and beak.

Literature: Brian Cullity, "The Songless Aviary: The World of A.E. Crowell & Son," Sandwich, MA, 1992, p. 86, figure 53, similar carving illustrated.
