Folger Family Nantucket, MA, c. 1850 11 in. long
An important plover decoy by one of the Island's most talented 19th-century carvers. This rig was made from a distinct and dense wood, perhaps mahogany. Given Nantucket's place in global trade, the material could have come from any corner of the earth. The rig was carefully stored in a cloth bag and includes both adults and juvenile "pale bellies." This mature decoy is in full breeding plumage with excellent gold feathering on an umber back. Original paint with even gunning wear. Bill and chip to underside of tail are restored.
