The catalog record
A. Elmer Crowell (1862-1952) East Harwich, MA, c. 1910 Hudsonian curlews were referred to as "jack curlews" by nineteenth-century gunners, we now know them as whimbrels. This miniature curlew is one of the maker's finest and earliest examples. Identified on the bottom as a "Jack Curlew" in handwritten script. The pigment and pattern is nearly identical to that seen on the life-size running curlew, Lot 380. Crowell’s earliest miniatures, like this carving, were mounted on small delicate bases. Outstanding original paint with the very tip of the primaries lightly blunted.
