Ira Hudson Canada Goose

Ira D. Hudson (1873-1949) Chincoteague, VA, c. 1920 25 1/2 in. long

The underside of this snaky-head carving has William J. Mackey's inked inscription that reads "Canada Goose Bay side of Eastern Shore Probably Chincoteague. Better than average VA." We now have the convenience of knowing this decoy is by Ira Hudson from Chincoteague on the seaside of Virginia's Eastern Shore peninsula. Mackey's notation is a reminder of the limited resources available during the early decoy collecting days. In working Hudson paint with heavy gunning wear, touch-up to filled crack along each side, and to reset cracks in head and neck.
