The catalog record
Standley Evans (1887-1979) Elkton, MD, c. 1920 According to J. Evans McKinney in his book "Decoys of the Susquehanna Flats," Evans made his first canvasback decoys in 1919 and continued making decoys until about 1933. His first canvasback decoys have glass eyes, and the heads are fastened with a large brass screw driven up through the bottom. The screw hole is plugged with cork and the head is secured by two small nails in the forepart of the neck. The strong influence of fellow Chesapeake Bay carver John Graham (1822-1912) is seen in this bird's graceful lines. A stellar Upper Bay example. In original paint, with a few minor nicks, rubs and scratches, tight hairline neck crack.
