John B. Garton (1924 - 2024) Smith Falls, Ontario, Canada 15"

Garton began carving as a teenager after contracting polio, using a D.W. Nichol decoy and a simple carving guide to create his first rig. He later studied feathering and painting with Nichol and developed the refined carving and distinctive paint work that became hallmarks of his birds.

Garton became a prominent figure in the competitive carving movement of the 1960s and 1970s, competing throughout Canada and the United States. In 1971, he was named World Champion in the Working Decoy Pair division at the Ward Foundation's World Championships with a pair of blue-winged teal. He continued to compete at the highest level while also carving miniatures for Orvis for nearly two decades.
