Ralph Johnston Redhead Pair

Ralph Johnston Detroit, MI c.1940's 16" long

A pattern maker by trade, Ralph was a prolific decoy maker in the early to mid 20th century in the Detroit area. Even playing a part in the Ben Schmidt operation at a time. His decoys are nicely formed, have simple paint, and were likely very effective. Both are hollow carved and have an applied 3/4 in bottom board with the bottom half being beveled into the underside. They have glass eyes, defined cheeks, and refined bill to face sculptural detail. Both heads are turned gently to the left. The bottoms have their original keels.

Condition: Very good and original with light working wear to include some paint rubs and the drake has a couple shot scars in its head. 2.75" line of working paint was added to the decoy to cover up a bare spot
