The catalog record

Samuel Squires Long Island, NY, c. 1900 15 in. long

A rare Squires-rig merganser with excellent form and paint. Only a small number of these decoys have surfaced. It has a high neck shelf, incised crest detail, and a thin upswept tail. This is among the most refined gunned-over mergansers to come off Long Island. A deep rig brand in the underside clearly reads "AMUEL.. SQUIRES" and has been presumed to be missing an "S" for Samuel. This may be for Samuel W. Squires (1868-1940) of Southampton, New York. Original paint with even gunning wear.
